Global Economic Governance Scholarships

As a leading interdisciplinary academic institution, the World Trade Institute (WTI) delivers advanced research and education in the field of global economic governance.
To tackle the shortage of knowledge-driven policymaking in emerging economies and to empower the next generation of leaders, the WTI seeks to support talented individuals by offering a full scholarship for its one-year Master’s programme.

Background

As trade has become increasingly globalized, its effects are more strongly felt at the local level, particularly in shaping people’s livelihoods. This development has contributed to widening socio-economic disparities and rising inequality within societies. At the same time, when implemented thoughtfully, international trade can play a powerful positive role by influencing economic conditions, fostering inclusion, and promoting greater equality.
Sustainable trade policies can also strengthen resilience against economic, social, and environmental shocks. Emerging economies, however, tend to be especially vulnerable, as they often lack knowledge-based approaches to policymaking. Addressing these challenges requires new perspectives and a new generation of talent equipped with expertise, strong networks, and problem-solving capabilities to drive meaningful change in the global trading system.

Initial Position

For over 25 years, the World Trade Institute has been a leading center for interdisciplinary research, teaching, and outreach in global economic governance, actively contributing to international discussions on economic, social, and environmental issues. To date, more than 600 students from around the world have taken part in WTI programmes. However, students from emerging economies remain underrepresented, largely due to financial barriers. Yet these students and their home countries stand to benefit significantly from the knowledge, skills, and networks gained through the WTI. Therefore, the WTI has formulated the following goals:

  • to empower young future leaders from emerging economies
  • to support knowledge-based policy making approaches
  • to contribute to a more sustainable, equal and balanced system of global economic governance
  • to foster global exchange and attract young talents

Strategy

In order to meet these goals and to address the lack of knowledge-based policy-making in emerging economies, the WTI aims to support two students from emerging economies per year through a scholarship for a one-year Master's programme.

What You Achieve

Thanks to your donation, a full one-year scholarship that covers tuition fees, travel, room and board for the duration of the program as well as a Master's thesis can be offered to an elected student from an emerging economy. In the greater context, your donation allows for young future leaders from emerging economies to gain expertise in global economic governance, sustainable development in emerging economies is fostered, students receive support through mentorship and the Alumni Association and potential future WTI employees and collaborators are identified.

Financial Need

The costs for a full one-year scholarship are CHF 52,196 per student.
